This is something I tried for the first time recently on this layout (http://www.scrapofyourlife.com.au/gallery1/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pos=9).
To achieve a mottled effect, as on the background in the above layout, spray Glimmermist or watered down paint onto your cardstock. Sprinkle with salt. As it dries, some of the excess water goes into the salt grains and you are left with a mottled effect. With brown/gold colours, this looks quite aged.
I think I'll try it again, with another colour!
